BERNIE FINKELSTEIN
TRUE NORTH: A Life Inside The Music Business
OTTAWA INTERNATIONAL WRITERS FESTIVAL
June 10, 7 p.m., Elmdale Tavern
From a one-man band in Canada’s infant music business to one of the country’s biggest and most successful independent record companies, Bernie Finkelstein’s True North: A Life Inside The Music Business, is the story of one of the most audacious and visionary enterprises in the exciting and turbulent history of Canadian music.
The brainchild of the high school dropout, True North has put out over 400 record albums, collected more than 40 gold and platinum albums and garnered 49 Junos and every type of award there is. No one has played a more seminal role in the musical lives of many of Canada’s most important singer-songwriters and bands including Bruce Cockburn, Murray McLauchlan, Dan Hill, Kensington Market, The Paupers, Rough Trade, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings and many more.
A passionate champion of Canadian content regulations, Finkelstein was the founder and chairman of MuchFACT for 26 years and has won many awards and honors including the Estelle Klein Award, the Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award at the Junos and the Order of Canada. In 2003, Finkelstein was elected to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
Join us on Sunday, June 10, 7 p.m. at the Elmdale Tavern, 1084 Wellington Street West, for the Ottawa launch of True North: A Life in the Music Business with Bernie Finkelstein, hosted by Ken Rockburn.
